[Review]
Dreamend - 2010 - So I Ate Myself, Bite by Bite
Genre: beautiful Indie Pop, Folk cruelty
Label: graveface records
I need to review this, because this album catched me at first listen and I am still spellbound.
Dreamend is the owner of graveface records and part of the bubblegum psych outfit Black Moth Super Rainbow. As Dreamend he released around 4 records since 2001. With his 2008 album „The Long Forgotten Friend“ he opend his classic postrock wall-of-sound to more poppy and folky fields.
[mp3] If only for a day from mentioned album is maybe one of beautifulest songs I've ever heard. It's a hymn - with a wonderful banjo pattern, yearning guitars and driving beat.
And that's the way he goes with the new album „So I Ate Myself, Bite by Bite“. Full of happy sounding melodies, singalongs, banjos, glockenspiel kling klang and all that stuff that make you hippies feel great.
But behind that shining glory there is a creepy story. Yeah - this record is the Charles Manson in the Summer of 69. Literally! It's the story of a serial killer.
[mp3] Pieces (via) is one of my faves. Again this great twinkling banjo, a rolling bassline, bells and driving drums. The label says this:
And if this all is not enough this record comes in a beautiful, creative package. I speak about the vinyl edition.
It „is presented like a phenakistoscope, a classic Victorian animation machine“ - best you watch the video below ;-).
And that's not all - there are tons of coloured papersheets inside and if you are under the first 150 orders (I hope I am) the you get a reproduced piece from the serial killers journal. Creepy!
So order your copy now, it's officially released in August, 10th 2010 but you get your digital download right after your order! Best you order the COMBO PACK with a Hospital Ships 7" ;-)
This will be one of my top 2010 records!

The banjo-laden song "Pieces" delves deep into the details of the crime with intrepidly gruesome lyrics. Its misleadingly upbeat energy by way of intricate drumming causes this song about brutal murder to be unusually catchy.[mp3] Magnesium Light
